How to Add Text Effects in UseCloudDraw
Plain text is boring. Sorry, but it is. If you're designing a logo, a social media graphic, or even a simple poster, you need your words to pop. In UseCloudDraw, you've got a full toolkit to turn ordinary text into eye-catching design elements — and the best part? You don't need to be a typography expert to pull it off. Let's dig in.
Adding Text to the Canvas
First things first — you've gotta get some text on your page.
Step 1: Insert a text object
- Click the Text Tool (the "A" icon) in the left toolbar.
- Click anywhere on the canvas to place a text box.
- Start typing — go ahead, write something inspiring like "Hello World" or your brand name.
You'll see your text appear with the default font and size. Nothing special yet, but we're about to change that.
Bold, Italic, and Underline
These are your bread-and-butter formatting options. The classics never go out of style.
Step 2: Apply basic formatting
- Highlight the text you want to format using the Text Tool.
- In the Properties panel on the right, look for the formatting row with B, I, and U buttons.
- Click B for bold, I for italic, or U for underline. You can mix and match.
I usually avoid underlining body text in designs — it can look messy and is often confused with links. But for emphasis on a single word? Sure, it works.
Changing Fonts and Sizes
This is where your design starts to develop personality. Font choice matters way more than most people think.
Step 3: Pick your font and size
- With your text selected, click the Font Family dropdown in the Properties panel.
- Scroll through the list or type a font name to search. UseCloudDraw supports all standard web fonts plus any custom fonts you've imported.
- Adjust the Font Size field — you can type a custom number or use the up/down arrows to nudge it.
My personal rule: don't use more than two fonts in one design. One for headlines (something bold or decorative), one for body text (clean and readable). That's it. Three fonts and things start looking like a ransom note.
Text Alignment
Left-aligned text feels casual and readable. Center-aligned feels formal and intentional. Right-aligned? Use it sparingly. It works for small labels or stylish layouts, but full paragraphs of right-aligned text are hard to read.
Step 4: Align your text
- Select your text object.
- In the Properties panel, find the alignment buttons: left, center, right, and justified.
- Click the one that fits your layout.
For multi-line text blocks, alignment makes a huge difference to the overall feel. Play with it and see what clicks.
Text on a Path
This one's my favorite. Text on a path lets you curve your words along a circle, an arc, or any custom shape. It's fantastic for logos, badges, and circular labels.
Step 5: Put text on a path
- Create a path using the Pen Tool or Bezier Tool. A simple curve or circle works great.
- Select both the text object and the path (hold Shift and click each).
- Go to Text → Put on Path in the top menu.
- Your text will now follow the shape of the path.
Want the text on the inside of the circle instead of the outside? Select the text and flip the path direction. It takes a bit of fiddling, but once you get it, you'll be making circular badges like a pro.
Drop Shadows and Glows
Now we're getting into the fun stuff. Drop shadows add depth. Glows add drama. Both make your text stand out from the background.
Step 6: Add a drop shadow
- Select your text object.
- Open the Fill & Stroke panel (look for the paint bucket icon).
- Click the Filter Effects tab.
- Choose Drop Shadow from the list of presets.
- Adjust the blur radius, offset, and opacity to taste. I usually keep the shadow subtle — a soft gray at 30% opacity with a 3-4px offset.
Heavy drop shadows are a classic beginner mistake. You want depth, not a text blob floating over the page. Less is more here.
Step 7: Add a glow effect
- Stay in the Filter Effects tab.
- Select Glow instead of Drop Shadow.
- Pick a color — white glows work great on dark backgrounds, while bright colors (neon green, hot pink) look amazing on black.
- Increase the blur radius for a softer, more spread-out glow.
Gradient Fills on Text
Solid color text is fine. Gradient text is chef's kiss. It adds dimension, energy, and that modern design feel.
Step 8: Apply a gradient fill
- Select your text.
- In the Fill & Stroke panel, switch the fill type from "Solid" to "Gradient."
- UseCloudDraw will apply the default gradient. Click the gradient preview to open the gradient editor.
- Add or remove color stops by clicking on the gradient bar. Drag them to adjust position.
- Pick colors that complement each other — sunset tones, ocean blues, or a sleek black-to-gray fade.
Here's a combo I love: a subtle linear gradient from dark blue to purple, paired with a faint white glow. It looks premium without trying too hard.
Outlining Text
Outlining (also called stroking) puts a border around your letters. It's great for making text readable over busy backgrounds, or for creating that vintage label look.
Step 9: Add an outline
- Select your text object.
- In the Fill & Stroke panel, switch to the Stroke Paint tab.
- Set a color for the outline. Black or white outlines are classic choices.
- Switch to the Stroke Style tab and increase the width. Start with 1px and go up from there.
Thick outlines (3px+) give a cartoon or sticker feel. Thin outlines (1px) feel more refined and editorial. Try both and see what fits your project.
Putting It All Together
Don't be afraid to stack effects. A gradient fill + subtle drop shadow + thin outline is a combo that works on almost any design. The key is balance — if everything is loud, nothing stands out.
My go-to text treatment for social media graphics: bold sans-serif font, gradient fill (warm colors), 2px white outline, and a soft 4px drop shadow at 25% opacity. It pops without screaming.
